Forklift trucks are an indispensable part of any modern factory or warehouse operation. However it is less than 100 years since they were invented, emerging around 1919. The key ideas that took time to develop was using forks for lifting goods (Rather than a winch or crane) and to position these forks ahead of the front wheels so that they could be lowered right to the floor.
